In fact, from my 16sqft space and 9 tomato plants I was able to have plenty for fresh eating and preserve over 40pints of sauce and salsa. I can't imagine if I gave them MORE space! I totally agree with your "start small" advice. You definitely don't want to make the garden so huge that you avoid it at all costs. Besides, in the beginning as you are learning, you don't want too much to have to take care of. Conquer a few vegetables first then branch out from there. I started with tomatoes, peas and lettuce. Now, 15 years later, I have over 30 different kinds of vegetables that I grow. I grow 9 tomato plants in a 16sqft space and get TONS of tomatoes. In fact, from my 16sqft space and 9 tomato plants I was able to have plenty for fresh eating and preserve over 40pints of sauce and salsa. I can’t imagine if I gave them MORE space!
