Pretty and Practical Indoor Plants

Do you love nature and gardening, but can’t get outdoors to work in the soil? Maybe it’s too hot or cold where you live, or you live in an apartment or condo with no private outdoor space. Perhaps a disability keeps you indoors.

If you need greenery in your life, there is a wide variety of plants for your home or office San Jose CA that are low maintenance, pretty, and practical.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera prefers soft artificial light or indirect sunlight and only needs to be watered once every two weeks or when the soil looks and feels completely dry. It needs a pot with good drainage at the bottom. Aloe Vera is also a medicinal plant, commonly used to treat minor burns and itches, and is a great natural air purifier.

Peppermint

This is a partial shade plant, so keep it close to a window or under a low-powered grow light. It will make your home smell amazing and is, of course, edible. Put it in tea or hot cocoa as a delicious flavoring and as a natural remedy for stomach aches and seasonal allergies. Water it lightly once every two or three days.

Ginger

This is another aromatic plant that also requires very little sunlight. It does, however, need plenty of water and a deep planter. The sprouts are lovely and the pink bulbs, once mature enough to protrude from the soil, add a beautiful aesthetic contrast. Ginger has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for migraines, joint inflammation, and menstrual cramps. It’s also delicious in soups and teas.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a beautiful light green herb that likes full sun and plenty of water. It’s a natural mosquito repellant, anti-viral, and can be boiled in tea to add citrusy flavor and ease nervous tension. One important note is to avoid consuming lemon balm if you have certain thyroid issues.

Once you make sure your plants are safe for your pets and consult a doctor before using herbal remedies, you can start your own practical indoor garden any time of year.
